Qualifying Exam (QE)
Guideline for Qualifying Examination (2300897)
1. Student must submit his/her scope of study that has been approved and signed by his/her advisor to the program committee within the second week of the semester that registered for 2300897 Qualifying Examination course. The scope of study (1 A4 page) must be well written in English and consists of research title, student name, advisor name, objective(s), rationale, and brief methodology with sufficient detail.
2. The program committee will assign 3 subjects for qualifying examination based on the submitted scope of study. One subject will be the student’s field of study. Student’s advisor may propose up to 5 potential subjects for the committee’s consideration. The program committee will also determine the score weight as well as the examiner of each subject.
3. The secretary of the program committee will schedule the examination room and date.
4. Evaluation criteria for the 2300897 Qualifying Examination:
4.1. Student must obtain at least 50 % score from each subject. Afterward, the score from each subject will be weighed and summed. The minimum of 60 % final weighed score is required for passing the examination and receive an S “satisfied” grade.
4.2. If the final weighed score is higher than 60 %, but the score of any subject is lower than 50 %, student will receive a U “unsatisfied” grade. In this case, student must register for the 2300897 course in the next semester and take the examination on the particular subject that received less than 50 % score from the past exam.
4.3. If the final weighed score is lower than 60 %, student will receive a U grade. In this case, student must register for the 2300897 course in the next semester and take the examination on every subject that received less than 60 % score from the past exam.
5. To evaluate for the qualifying examination in the second registration, the score(s) obtained from the re-exam subject(s) will be weighed and summed with the weighed score(s) of the subject(s) passed in the first registration. The final weighed score must be at least 60 % in order to pass the course.
6. According to the Graduate Studies Regulation of Chulalongkorn University, student can register for the 2300897 course for only two times. If student receives a U grade from the second registration, he/she will be retired.
7. Student must take the qualifying examination and receive an S grade within the following deadlines:
7.1 Student holding Master’s degree upon his/her entry to the program (program scheme 1.1 and 2.1) must obtain an S grade within 3 semester from the first semester they enrolled (= before 4th semester ends).
7.2. Student holding Bachelor’s degree upon his/her entry to the program (program scheme 1.2 and 2.2) must obtain an S grade within 4 semester from the first semester they enrolled (= before 5th semester ends).
Proposal defense
Student must submit a dissertation proposal (approved by advisor and co-advisors) to the secretary of the program committee at least 2 weeks in advance of the presentation date in the 2300894 Doctoral Dissertation Seminar class. Please leave the two positions of the dissertation committee (page D4) blanked and the program committee will select and appoint them according to the university regulation.
For students with ID 617xxxxx23 or later: The dissertation committee (5 to 7 persons) are comprised of his/her advisor and co-advisor(s), 3 committee members (at least 2 must be from the program’s list of academic staff), and 1 external examiner who will serve as chair of the dissertation committee (as shown below).

The dissertation proposal must be well written in English, using the updated/valid forms (D1 to D5) provided by the Academic Affairs, Faculty of Science.
The appendix must be in English and no longer than 10 pages (A4 ) containing the general content (rationale, literature review, expected outcome) with clear and concise structure and appropriate citation. The methodology should include a clear scope of research, experimental design and sufficient detail on the research technique.
After giving the proposal presentation in the 2300894 Doctoral Dissertation Seminar class, student will defense the proposal to the program committee (If the student does not take the proposal defense during the semester, he/she is allowed to give proposal presentation directly to the program committee). Student should understand every aspects of his/her research, including the basic knowledge related to the research background, as it is one of the criteria that the program committee use for evaluation (in addition to the amounts and depth of work). The dissertation proposal must be approved by the program committee and Faculty of Science within 6 semesters after the student’s first enrollment to the program, otherwise the student will be retired.
After the approval of the dissertation proposal, student must conduct his/her research according to the approved proposal and fulfill every objective. If student wish to change or omit parts of his/her research, the revised proposal must be submitted and approved by the program committee. In case of the major revision, student is also required to defense his/her revised proposal to the program committee at least 3 months prior to student’s scheduled dissertation defense date, and the revised proposal must be approved by Faculty of Science at least 60 days prior to student’s scheduled dissertation defense date.
Student must record the information of his/her dissertation in the online database of CU Graduate School website.
Research publication for graduation
Guideline for publishing research article in the international journal:
Student must write manuscript out of the data as a part of the dissertation. Only the full research article is accepted as the fulfillment of graduation requirements. (Short note or short communication cannot be used.)
Student must be the first author of the manuscript with a major advisor as the corresponding author*. Arrangement other than the aforementioned sentence must be approved by major advisor.
Student must use the following two addresses as an affiliation:

2 Department of ………… , Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok 10330, Thailand
The program does not allow student to use the current address other than “Chulalongkorn University” as his/her affiliation.
*For the major advisor, it is acceptable to use only the affiliated department and research group (if any) without the program name.
After manuscript submission, student must present 1) a proof of manuscript submission from the journal, and 2) a copy of the first page of the manuscript with title of the article and authors’ name and address, especially those of the first author and the corresponding author. to the secretory of the program ASAP for verification and approval by the program committee.
The international journal where the manuscript is submitted must be on an online database approved by Chulalongkorn University, according to the Graduate Studies Regulation and related announcements.
Graduation requirements
Students must register and pass all required subjects with the GPAX not less than 3.00.
Student must have the English score (CU-TEP more than 67; TOEFL more than 525; IELTS more than 5.5) or must pass the English course according to Graduate School/Program.
Student must register the 2300897 Qualifying Examination and must pass the QE with ‘S’ within 4 semesters (Type 1.1 and 2.1) and within 5 semesters (Type 1.2 and 2.2).
Student must defense the proposal and thesis following the rules of the Biological Sciences Program and the CU Graduate School.
Student must submit the complete thesis following the rules of CU Graduate School.
Student must have the research publication(s) as the Program required.
